AI Is Not Replacing BPO. It's Re-Pricing It.

The interesting question about AI and BPO is not “will it replace agents.” Of course it will replace some — that’s already happening on the easy tier of inbound. The interesting question is what happens to the price of the work that remains.

The floor of human work is moving up. The questions that reach a human are now the harder ones, the emotionally weighted ones, the ones with ambiguous policy or genuine judgment. Those people should be paid more, not less. The contracts should be re-priced upward at the top of the cone and aggressively automated at the bottom.

Most BPO incumbents are doing the opposite — squeezing per-seat costs while pretending the work hasn’t changed. That works for one cycle. Then their best operators leave for the firms that figured this out earlier.
